1st of ELUL - the Haggai Prophecy
1st of Elul — Your House vs. His House?
Today marks the first of four prophecies delivered by the Prophet Haggai. In Haggai 1:1–13, God asks a simple question:
How are your finances going?
You sow much but reap little. You earn wages only to put them into a leaky purse.
Why? Because you are preoccupied with your own houses while My House—the Temple—lies in ruins.
God then commands Zerubbabel to begin rebuilding the Temple, with the powerful promise: “I am with you.”
Ezra 5–6 records what happens next. Zerubbabel begins rebuilding, but Tattenai, the Persian governor, sends a letter to King Darius questioning the Jews’ authority to do so.
Darius responds in fabulous fashion:
Stand down. Stay away. Let the Jews rebuild their Temple.
And not only that—the costs of construction are to be paid from the royal treasury!
